Nationwide Disruption: Repercussions of the Change Healthcare Cyberattack

March 13, 2024 Lauren Kaufmann

On February 21st, 2024, Change Healthcare, a major player in processing healthcare claims in the US, fell victim to a cyberattack. This incident resulted in significant nationwide disruptions to the healthcare system and – as of March 1, 2024 (almost a month later) – the healthcare industry and patients are still dealing with the repercussions.

Impact of the Outage:

  • Administrative and Billing Issues: The attack crippled core functionalities, affecting tasks like submitting electronic claims, processing provider payments, and managing prescriptions.
  • Strain on Healthcare Providers: Hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies faced delays and backlogs, hindering their ability to deliver efficient care.
  • Patient Concerns: Delays in approvals and disruptions in medication access caused inconvenience and potential anxieties for patients.

Response and Recovery:

  • Change Healthcare: The company prioritized containing the attack, investigating the scope of the breach, and restoring operations.
  • Government Agencies: The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) offered support and encouraged the healthcare sector to strengthen cybersecurity measures.
  • Healthcare Organizations: Many healthcare providers implemented temporary workarounds and contingency plans to minimize disruptions to patient care.

Current Situation (as of March 13, 2024):

  • Gradual Restoration: Change Healthcare's systems are progressively returning online.
  • Financial Relief: The Biden administration announced advanced payments for impacted healthcare providers to mitigate financial strain.
  • Focus on Cybersecurity: The attack underscores the critical need for robust cybersecurity practices throughout the healthcare industry.

Looking Ahead:

The response to the cyberattack on healthcare billing systems and processes underscores the importance of being proactive in mitigating and negating potential risks.

While some efforts have been made to improve funding for those impacted and in need, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. This includes the need for open communication and collaboration to develop strong and trusted technology partnerships in order to overcome challenges as well as safeguard the well-being of all stakeholders, most notably patients.
